Jani Rose rocking Public Assembly with Navegante Tonight!

I absolutely LOVE Navegante. This band is all the eclectic soul, funk, electronic, latino, mish mosh of deliciousness that my summer needs and I have been DYING to see them. So imagine how extra I feel that I was invited by my lovely friend Jean to join them in reading a poem over some of their beats.

How could I say no to that? This is living, mi gente. Do you love what you do? No? Then stop doing it and get to your passions. Push past the mundane and the fear and live in the moment. Do you have magic percolating in your veins? Then BE that!

There would be so much more happiness in the world if people would just allow themselves to be who they are.

Create! Live! Love!

See you tonight <3

Here's a clip to familiarize you with my boys and the flyer for tonight. Love you, babies! The BX is visiting the Bk! Let's do it! haha :)

Where is Real Hip-Hop?

Right here! Still being birthed in the Bronx like honey from the rock. There are few people amongst the masses, who can translate every nuance of life into sound. They interpret passion, angst,  struggle, victory, all tales worth telling, which from the beginning of time have been passed down through song by those with the unrelenting call to transform the human experience into living art. With music streaming through their veins they go about their days collecting inspiration from the world around them, storing them to throw into the air later as collages of sound. They answer the call for beats that sync with the spirit, that make close your eyes and nod your head in deep affirmation.

When you have two hip-hop beasts together on a Friday night something interesting is bound to happen. Boricua musicians Roberto "Plena" Irizarry and Maria Isa, blended their talents and managed to lay down some tracks that puts half of what's being pushed by the industry to shame.

Me with Plena & Isa at Momma's Hip Hop Kitchen - click to learn more about this awesome estrogen led hip hop movement

A dynamic Nuyorican poet who is a blend of all things traditional Puerto Rico, quality hip-hop and rock, Plena offers a sounds all his own. SotaRican Maria Isa, who is also an accomplished stage actor, is 1 part gypsy beauty, 1 part activist, 2 parts lyrical genius. With fresh rhymes and very clear perspective she is a true blue emcee, able to spit knowledge while keeping you fully entertained. One of the tracks, "Isa Bronx Freestylin", recorded completely off the top of her head seems as effortless as breathing.

With our energy up from the night before, we headed over to Momma's Hip Hop Kitchen, Kathleen Adams and Lah Tere's free annual hip hop event at Hostos Community College on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx. Maria's stage presence and message blew the crowd away. Lah Tere is yet another talented sister who's musical talent is surpassed only by her spiritual beauty. She closed out an amazing afternoon with gratitude and a barefoot call and answer piece that moved the crowd while reminding us of what we were there for; The empowerment of women of all ages to improve our own lives and that of our communities at large through the confidence that comes with owning our creativity and voices. And with all that said, I am now pleased to present the first song of Isa's upcoming EP,

Ruff and Uncut: Plenazo De Isa

My favorite singer ~ Billie Holiday "Strange Fruit"

I adore this woman. She sings my soul & rends my spirit. Her gift for conveying emotion, for expressing the depths of the despair, showing you the sludge that can be scraped from the nether regions of the human experience, is uncanny. Billie Holiday is a treasure. And she didnt just moan about love lost and a broken heart.

One of her most important performances ever...

Bomba y Plena's Labor Day Weekend

Facebook. Some people jumped in early, some only after even their grandmothers finally got a page. In many ways it's the glue that holds families and communities together even if people don't like to admit it, it's an important part of our lives. We cheer each other through births, new jobs and opportunities; support each other through deaths, losses and the blues. We find roomates, jobs and sometimes even spouses there! Our Facebook fam is pretty tight. In a lot of ways, we're closer to our Facebook friends than we are to our actual relatives. Who do you see more? Us or your second cousins? Exactly. When Lisa "La Boricua Goddess" posted that her annual Labor Day picnic was on the horizon many people became excited, me included. I haven't been out and about for some time and there was no way I was going to miss it.

Plena and I went to an early afternoon rehearsal for his part of our birthday tribute for Algarin that was as fun as could be! I'm so proud of how amazingly talented my love is. Plena  really tore it up with something fun and as is his usual way, very unique. Ya'll not ready! ;)

Then we hustled off to Orchard Beach in a gypsy cab trying to charge us pretty much what it would cost to get to the airport! We both started in and he relented to charging a decent amount of money. The NERVE! Literally highway robbery. Hmmmph!

Upon arrival we were struck by how truly beautiful the day was. Here we were all awaiting Hurricane Earl's wrath and the day was mild and beautiful.  It was sunny, but not beaming, and there was a delicious breeze. Con besitos y abrazos Bomba y Plena joined the fray finding ourselves amidst our poetry family and friends. I was so excited to see my girls! I immediately saw our hostess, la bella, Lisa "La Boricua Goddess" busy as a honey bee & mis adoraciones, author and host of the fabulous "La Loba" poetry series, Vanessa Martir and activist poet "Simply Rob" Vassilarakis . I was so glad we'd been able to make it out to the last outdoor "Wepa!" of the summer. Here we could chill with the homies from Brooklyn, a powerful boricua couple making moves with us, the ubiquitous MC Papo Swiggity, host of our afore mentioned 9/11 tribute & the brilliant Olalana Sasu (we just call her Sue), his better half como se dice.  They're the bomb and she had on a Jack Skellington t-shirt to prove it. Georgie Acevedo made sure that we were all comfy and that no one was thirsty - Peach Schnapps & ginger ale? Yes please! The talented sisters & I had a refreshing convo about business, poetry, the state of our community. We welcomed Nia Siacara Andino back home from the motherland after a nice vacay in Spain. A wonderful surprise! Miguel Algarín, next weekend's special guest of honor was "in the house" relaxing and sharing words with the people who have come to see him as a mentor and friend. All the while Sandra Guzman, our highly esteemed and much loved archivist snapped away, even lying down in the grass and sand to get the perfect shot.

Georgie & Goddess! Vaya, Boricua!

Us! Bomba y Plena relaxing in the sun, listening to our talented friends. Must've been a deep poem!

La Boricua Goddess, Lisa. You did good, babes!

The much anticipated entertainment began with poetry and the rhythms of Machete Movement and Certified Master Drummer Juan Cartagena of Segunda Quimbamba.

NeNe Ali spits like no other 12 year old I've ever seen

Members of Grito - True Poetess, Tito Luna and Simply Rob tearing our ears and hearts openVanessa "La Loba" Martir acknowledging love for her mother Yemaya

El Chulito Carlito - Carlos Manuel Rivera sharing a poem "del pelo alisado"

Roberto Plena Irizarry schooling people with the piece "Rockin' to the Greatest"

Lyrical poet Blaze A Page reps The Babble[O]nianz

Once Blaze A Page of the The Babble[O]nianz graced the grass we were ready to run to hustle "Simply" to his next event when "SURPRISE!!!" Once everyone had their say, Goddess and Simply got down to the tambores while we sang a flavorful version of "Happy Birthday" for him accompanied by the Machete Movement! It was awesome!

VAYA! Happy Birthday, Simply!

There were over a 100 of us at the picnic! The music, poetry and the sense of community was thick. She was excited and knew it would be fun but once people started getting amped Goddess was overwhelmed by the love and response. She wanted so much to please us all, to make it wonderful for us and she did. We are thankful to our beloved chula for bringing us together and look forward to the next one and the next one and the next one. Y seguimos pa'lante!

Well done! WE LOVE YOU, LISA!!!!

whiter shade of pale - the teenage years

cigarette smoke curled toward the sky

tears rolled from each eye

i asked of the moon if there would be a day when the pain

didn't congest my thoughts and throat

supple lips murmured prayers through quivers

a misused hand dangled over the railing

which kept me on the sill

mostly against my will

into the octagonal courtyard

glowing into the brick cyclinder

where my window sucked in the blue light

it was the only place i had to see the stars and sky

like rapunzel looking from the window of the tower

i hope for a prince

knew none would come

like a woman of the world i gathered my thoughts

knew none would come

a bag regret and abuse

little more that a silk purse full of lint

i waited for the moment to pass

promising each cigarette would be the last

but as they were my only companions

i sucked in their poison welcoming their ominous promise
